Impressionism with Paula Billups
The term “impressionism” was coined as a description because a newspaper critic thought the artists were painting mere sketches or impressions. The painting style is characterized chiefly by the general impression produced by a scene or object and the use of unmixed primary colors and small strokes to simulate actual reflected light. En Plein Air refers to painting outdoors in a natural setting. Learn the secrets of impressionist painting as you take inspiration from the green surrounds of FVAC, including our popular artists’ garden. Materials will be provided.
Date: October 11, 2008
Time: 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Tuition: $48 (Member Price: $43)
Abstract Painting with Carolann Dvorak-Brewer
Abstract art does not depict subjects as they appear in the natural world, but instead uses color and form in a non-representational way. The term has more often been used to describe art that depicts real forms in a simplified way—keeping only an allusion to the original natural subject. To master abstract art is to determine the essence of your subject and use your artist’s eye and some creative license to allude to your inspiration on paper. Take your subject apart in your mind and put it back together on paper; this is a challenging exercise and a worthy mental undertaking. Some painting experience will be helpful for this workshop, but all levels are welcome. Materials will be provided.
Date: October 18, 2008
Time: 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Tuition: $48 (Member Price: $43)
Learning to Paint the Figure with Paula Billups
The human figure is a best approached with a light heart and a healthy dose of humility, a willingness to always be a beginner and be surprised by the truth of anatomy and movement. We will take this two-day workshop to learn the fundamentals of painting the nude figure from direct observation. Each section will begin with a short discussion of anatomy and effective ways to address form. On Saturday there will be a brief demonstration by the instructor to get things started. We will spend the remainder of the time working from the figure using a limited palette. Painters at all levels are welcome in this class. The instructor will work with each student according to their skill level. Students may work in oil or acrylic. A materials list is available at www.fvac.net.
